About the Burrell Collection

The Burrell Collection opened in 1983, it has a major collection of Chinese art that explores ancient Chinese culture, art and philosophy; it is one of the most wide-ranging and comprehensive collections of its kind in Europe. It traces the artistic development of China from the Neolithic period to 19th Century Qing dynasty export wares. Sir William Burrell’s fascination with Chinese culture, art and philosophy is reflected in the wide range of items that he gifted to Glasgow in 1944. The Chinese Collection encompasses the arts of Buddhism and Taoism, funerary art, jade, bronzes, ceramics, textiles, musical instruments, painting, roof tiles, religious images, prints and wooden sculpture and furniture. Amongst the most important material are the collections of pottery (earthenware, ceramic, porcelain) made for funerary, domestic and export purposes and ritualistic, utilitarian and archaistic bronzes.
